State of Emergency Declared After Massive Water Leak

The city is losing water at a rate of 10 million gallons per day

New London, Connecticut, is dealing with a massive water emergency because of a leak in the system, New London Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio said Thursday morning, and he is declaring a state of emergency.

The city is losing water at a rate of 10 million gallons per day. Residents should prepare for loss of water and begin conservation efforts now, the mayor said.

The city of New London uses an average of 7 million gallons of water a day and the city could lose all water supply in a matter of hours, Finizio said.

The problem was detected around 6:30 a.m. As of around 8:30 a.m., the city has identified the location of the problem and crews are working on repairs. The mayor did not say where the leak occured, but said Gov. Dannel Malloy has also committed state support, according to the mayor.

The cause of the problem is unknown, but Finizio said significant flooding could have eroded lines, contributing to the problem.
