Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley announced Wednesday he is resigning from his position.
Conley said from his Boston offices that he informed Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker earlier in the day that he would be stepping down on Sept. 26 at 4 p.m.
Conley, who had announced earlier this year he would not be seeking reelection, said he is taking a job in the private sector with the law firm Mintz Levin and its subsidiary ML Strategies, LLC.
After serving five terms as district attorney, Conley said he was looking forward to joining the law practice.
"As I told many of you when I announced I would not seek a fifth term, there are still professional opportunities and challenges I would like to pursue in my legal career," said Conley. "I'm going to have the opportunity to go back to the hands-on practice of law that first inspired me."
Conley has been the Suffolk County district attorney since 2002 and has served in public office for 25 years. He got emotional as he thanked his prosecutors and the people he has worked with.
"Serving them has been an integral part of my life since I was 26 years old, but I have never for one minute forgotten that it is a rare and privileged opportunity to do," Conley said.

Baker will have to appoint a successor to serve out the remaining three months of Conley's term.
