(NECN: Haverhill, Mass.) - Just as people were starting their day, a fire broke out this morning in a Haverhill, Massachusetts apartment.

Witnesses rushed into the burning building to rescue those inside.

Bob Carrier is being dubbed as a Good Samaritan. He describes the scene.

"I kicked the door in and ran up the stairs to locate people...there was nothing, but black smoke...I fell on top of the woman," says Bob Carrier.

"I thought she was deceased, but the next thing I heard was, OW, OW, OW," says Carrier.

"I yelled to everybody -- come on, there is a fire, get out, get out, get out," says Carrier.

"I know the woman that I pulled out," says Carrier. I know the whole family. I've known them for years."

"It was an impulse thing. It wasn't even a thought," says Carrier.

One woman suffers major burns.
