Green Dream: Milk-based paint

(New England Dream House) - A Groton, Massachusetts company is making all natural milk based paint. It's great for the environment and for people with chemical allergies.

This room got its beautiful color in an environmentally friendly way. Milk-based paints have been around for thousands of years. Anne Thibeau explains how The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company" makes it.

"The main ingredient is milk protein or casein," she says. "That's the binder, the really strong binder that makes it stick. You mix that with crushed limestone, clay, earth pigments."

Thirteen different ingredients are weighed and mixed into the paint. It ends up as a powder, not a liquid. Anne says that's because it doesn't have preservatives.

looks aren't the only difference. She says, "it's all natural, 100% biodegradable, completely non-toxic, zero VOC's."
