Apple hoping new features to propel iPhone sales

(NECN/NBC News: Mark Barger) - Apple's newest incarnations of the iPhone arrive in stores Friday, the iPhone 5s and the 5c.

Tech watchers are anxious to see what kind of reception the updates get.

In previous years, braving the first day frenzy to snare the newest iPhone turned Apple customers into conquering heroes.

Whether the company's new iPhone 5s sparks similar scenes Friday is an open question.

Scott Stein, senior editor of cnet.com, said, "It's not really the brand new gadget that fulfills that interest that you want for something new and magical from Apple."

Stein says the new flagship 5S will hold appeal to certain iPhone customers, thanks in part to a faster processor, which is two to three times quicker than before.

Stein said, "If you go for things like, gaming, and in particular, if you use the camera a lot, those are going to be strong incentives to take a look at the 5s."

But maybe the most attention getting addition is "touch id", the phone's fingerprint reader.

Stein said, "Right now, it only works for passcode unlock and iTunes password storage, so it's not going to be a catch all to replace all of your passcodes or act as digital wallet yet."

He added, “I'm sure that's something that's being thought about. Security's a huge issue. It would be a huge coup if something like that were to work."

Apple's hoping for an immediate coup with the 5c, priced at 99 dollars. It's $100 less than the 5s and available in five colors.

With smartphone competition intensifying, Apple's hoping its new twin iPhones will pose double trouble for its rivals.
