BARRINGTON, R.I. (AP) — Barrington has become the first Rhode Island town to ban plastic shopping bags.

The Providence Journal reports (bit.ly/QTGkra) that the town council approved the ban Monday night 4-1.

The ordinance goes into effect Jan. 1 and includes a two-year sunset clause, so the ban will expire in January 2015 if it is not renewed.

Once the ban goes into effect, grocery stores, retail stores and restaurants will no longer be able to give customers plastic shopping bags.

Some stores had already phased out plastic bags in anticipation of the vote.

San Francisco was the first U.S. city to ban plastic shopping bags in 2007. Westport, Conn., is thought to be only other New England town where they're banned.
