Millions of Children Live on Food Stamps: Report

Tens of millions of American children are among the recipients of food stamps, according to a new report from the United States Department of Agriculture. The reports showed that about 45 percent of food stamp benefits went to children under 18, totaling about 20 million youth. The overall cost of the program in the 2012 fiscal year was $78.4 billion, NBC News reported. The rising costs of the program has caused lawmakers to debate over its sustainability, while the food insecurity rate -- the percentage of American households who have difficulties feeding their families at some point during the year -- rose sharply in 2008 and has yet to fall substantially since, according to the most recent government data.
