Delhaize Group, the parent company of Hannaford, and Royal Ahold N.V., which owns Stop & Shop, both issued press releases early Tuesday confirming that they have entered into preliminary discussions "to explore the opportunity of combining the two companies.

The discussions "may or may not result in a future transaction," the companies said.

If the companies did merge, the Boston Globe reports they would become one of the largest chains of grocery stores on the East Coast.

Hannaford has more than 180 stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont. Stop & Shop has more than 375 stores throughout New England, New York and New Jersey. Most of the overlap between the two companies is in Massachusetts, according to the Globe.

Boston Business Journal reporter David Harris joined necn to discuss earlier this week, saying that both companies have a significant presence in New England's competitive market.
