(NECN) – In the race to become Boston’s next mayor, Martin Walsh has defeated John Connolly in the polls.

Connolly fought a long battle, getting his name in the race before Tom Menino announced he would not be seeking another term.

For more on Walsh’s victory and the challenges he’ll face, we were joined by Democratic strategist Mara Dolan.

She said that the key to victory was when the progressives and unions came together for one candidate when they realized they wanted the same things.

What is the key challenge Walsh faces?

“There is great economic inequality in Boston. There are people who are doing well, people who aren’t doing well. He wants to provide opportunity for all Bostonians.”

She said that he’ll have to work hard to make good on the campaign promises he made.
