Car Bomb Near Kabul Airport Targets U.S. Convoy

The Taliban on Monday claimed responsibility for a car bomb near an airport in Kabul that was intended for a convoy of U.S. Embassy guards who live at Camp Sullivan near the airport, NBC News reported.

An official said the attack missed the convoy and detonated explosives at the gate, injuring 19 civilians. Camp Sullivan is a residential compound for civilian contractors, attached to Camp Baron.

Another suicide car bomb detonated in the same area that morning at a police checkpoint, though no one was injured.

These bombings are the latest in a series of attacks. Afghan forces battled insurgent near the Indian consulate in Mazar-e-Sharif, injuring three, Sunday night. On Friday, a suicide bomber killed two and injured 18 at a popular French restaurant in Kabul.

Talks to revive the peace process will occur next week.
