(NECN: Boston, Mass.) - The Boston skyline, near the city's North End, will soon look a little different.

On Thursday, Boston Mayor Tom Menino and other city leaders broke ground on a new, $190 million apartment and retail complex, dubbed One Canal Street.

It is right next to the Rose Kennedy Greenway at the corner of Valenti Way and Beverly Street.

The 12-story building will house 310 apartments and shops will occupy the ground level.

Aimco is the owner and operator for the project, which will be constructed by Trinity, and financed in part by a $114 million  loan provided by Prudential.  The site has been leased to Aimco pursuant to a 99-year ground lease from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

There is no word on when it will be completed.
