Food Pantry Closing After 33 Years

The Bingham Area Food Pantry will close on Aug. 31

A Bingham, Maine, food pantry is closing at the end of the month after more than three decades of feeding the area's hungry because it has been unable to find a new home.

The Bingham Area Food Pantry has been housed in the rectory at St. Peter Church for 33 years, but the church is selling the building because the lone nun who lived there retired.

After about a year of searching, the pantry hasn't found a new location that meets its needs. It will close on Aug. 31.

Louise Carl, who founded the pantry 33 years ago, tells the Kennebec Journal it is the only one in Somerset County that delivers food. Most of those who use its services are elderly and disabled and live in rural areas.
