(AP/NECN/NBC News: Tracie Potts, Washington) -  Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is one of the Obama administration officials who was expected to be meeting with congressional leaders Thursday, in an effort to head off the series of tax increases and spending cuts set to automatically take effect in January.

Republicans are complaining that the White House is slow-walking the talks and hasn't given specifics on how President Barack Obama would curb the rapid growth of benefit programs like Medicare and Medicaid.
