Woman Killed in Attleboro Highway Crash

22-year-old Erica Hopkins, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, died following the crash Friday night

One woman has died after she was ejected from the vehicle she was traveling in and then hit by another vehicle in a two-car accident on a Massachusetts highway late Friday night.

State police say 22-year-old Erica Hopkins, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, died Saturday at Rhode Island Hospital.

The crash happened Friday around 11 p.m. on Interstate 95 in Attleboro.

A preliminary investigation shows Hopkins was a passenger in a Volvo that was being driven by a 24-year-old man, also from Pawtucket. The man, who has not been identified, was driving on I-95 South when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control of his vehicle, causing it to crash in the roadway and come to a rest in the left and middle travel lanes.

Officials say both the driver and Hopkins were ejected from the Volvo after the crash.

Around this time, a 17-year-old driving a BMW southbound struck the Volvo. Hopkins and the 24-year-old Volvo driver were also then struck. It's unclear if they were struck by the BMW or by their own vehicle after it was struck by the BMW.

Both occupants of the Volvo were taken with serious injuries to Rhode Island Hospital where Hopkins later died. There was no update Saturday on the driver's condition.

The BMW driver was uninjured in the crash.

State Police were assisted on scene by Attleboro Fire and EMS, Attleboro Police, and MassDOT.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
