GINGERBREAD VILLAGE HELPS CANCER SURVIVORS ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS Dec. 3, 2008 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Susan Mason (708) 798-9171 Digital photos attached. (These are low-res photos, but they show the detail and scale of the creation. 1.JPG shows an elf at work. 2.JPG shows one of the multi-storied, mechanical gingerbread chateaus with standard Christmas lights to show the scale, 3.JPG shows one-third of the display; there is a standard dining room chair in the background for scale.) While many have experienced the emotional and financial toll from a cancer diagnosis, very few can say that a cancer diagnosis led to being a star in an amazing gingerbread wonderland. Janet and Kurt Gustafson, 1424 Braeburn in Flossmoor, invite the media to film/photograph their elaborate, "have-to-see-to-believe," room-sized gingerbread village. This year, the Gustafsons added special decorations featuring local families affected by cancer. As a special tribute to those who are involved with The Cancer Support Center in Homewood, Janet added photos of children who benefit from The Center's FREE family programs, artwork from the kids' programs at The Center, and a tree of wishes, completed by children who have a parent or sibling with cancer. **Monday, Dec. 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., join the spirit of the season as these featured families will tour the Gustafsons' gingerbread village and look for their special photos, wishes and artwork.** Janet begins construction of this room-sized wonderland each July, and after more than 50 pounds of icing, she puts the decorative touches on it in late November. Her vision, coupled with husband Kurt's engineering skill, brings the gingerbread village to life! With "flying" elves, dancing figurines, ice-skating elves with a special word puzzle, and hundreds of spinning sweets, this enchanting village is open to friends, family, neighbors and the community each winter. Your camera crew will be talking about this for years to come! Viewers really have to see the extraordinary display to fully appreciate the intricacies and detail in each gingerbread chateau. (See attached photos.) The Gustafsons became involved with The Cancer Support Center in honor of a friend who was fighting aggressive breast cancer. This year, with Janet's original whimsical poem, visitors will look for elves who help, words that inspire and a tree of wishes for all humanity. To attend on Monday, or see this sugary creation that will warm your heart, and nudge your funny bone, please call Susan Mason at (708) 798-9171. She will arrange a tour for you, and point out the photos, artwork and tree of wishes that honor local families affected by cancer. Since 1994, The Cancer Support Center has provided FREE educational workshops, support groups and exercise and relaxation programs for people with cancer and their loved ones. All programs at The Cancer Support Center are free of charge and open to Chicago Southland and Northwest Indiana community members. The Center has a second location at 19250 Everett Lane in Mokena. The Cancer Support Center is always seeking volunteers, donations and items for our wish list. Please call (708) 798-9171 for more information or visit www.cancersupportcenter.org
