(NECN) - Lt. Paul Vance of the Conn. State Police updated the media on Friday afternoon in the wake of a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Authorities are still in the process of accounting for every student at the school -- including those who were absent on Friday -- as well as identifying the deceased.

Vance did not confirm the identity of the alleged shooter, who died at the crime scene, saying only that police had a "tentative identification." He did confirm that 20 children were killed in the shooting, along with six adults, the shooter and one additional adult at a secondary crime scene.

Vance also said that counseling would be provided to first responders at the school because of the harrowing and tragic scene they encountered.
