(NECN) - Statistics show mass shootings are not necessarily more common now than they were before, but they are causing more deaths.

Experts say it seems the shooters are trying to out-do each other and that makes this trend all too scary.
     
Dr. Kevin Thomas, director of Boston University's Healthcare Emergency Management Program, joined NECN in the newsroom to discuss what to do if you're ever caught in an active shooter situation.

"They need to know that they need to run first, hide second, and the last resort fight. Be away from the event that occurs," says Thomas.
