Green Bay shelter plans service for homeless dead

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — As Wisconsin braces for a major snowstorm, one Green Bay homeless shelter plans to host a service in memory of people who have died on the streets.

A Wisconsin Public Radio report ( ) says St. John the Evangelist is a temporary shelter for people with nowhere else to spend the night. It's only open during the cold-weather season.

The shelter plans to hold a memorial service Thursday. Shelter spokeswoman Laura Robinson says five homeless people died this year, but officials will also light a sixth candle for all those who are unnamed or unidentified.

She says an average of 60 people spend the night there. She says the situation will get a lot worse when temperatures plunge into the teens and lower. She says "it really is a crisis situation."
