| January 9, 2009 Movies: Bride Wars, Unborn, Not Easily Broken

(NECN) - Tom Meek, movie critic for the Boston Phoenix, has the goods on some of the newer releases to hit movie theaters.
Check out Tom's opinion on these flicks:
Bride Wars Much of this movie was filmed in Boston, and it sports a great cast, headlined by Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. The two serve as best friends forever, but are scheduled to wed on the same day, which splits their bond. The film never really reaches a truly funny level. In the end, the movie has as much character of a wedding cake -- fancy on the outside, but underneath there is no substance.
Unborn
It's the Omen and the Exorcist blended together, which is not necessarily the best thing. You'll feel like you have seen this film a million times before.
Not Easily Broken
Based on a preacher's book, the film comes across as quite preachy. The performances are great, making this movie the best of this grouping. The basis of the film is tragedy besetting a marriage, but the melodrama is actually uplifting.
