Dr. Anand Devaiah is a head and neck surgeon at Boston Medical Center. In recent months, he has extensively tested a new laser surgery device made by Omniguide of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The laser uses a special infrared light which surgeons love because they can control how deeply it cuts. There have been other infrared laser surgery devices but this is the first one with flexible fiber tube to aim the light right where the surgeons needs it. The tube only needs a tiny incision, or a natural body opening which can mean a lot less cutting.
Omniguide just closed on $25 million in new venture capital funding. That is on top of the $50 million dollars that investors have already put into the company. The new funds are going to help Omniguide expand into several new surgical markets.
Dr. Devaiah has done over 100 head and neck surgeries with the device. He is now serving as a paid consultant to the company. He won't yet claim the device is perfect or suitable for every surgery.
