(NECN) - Airlines Delta and Northwest have cleared the final hurdle in their merger process, with Delta acquiring Northwest Airlines for $2.8 billion.
They won antitrust approval and settled a lawsuit aimed at blocking the transaction.
The combined carrier will become the world's largest airline and use the name 'Delta' with a base in Atlanta starting in 2009.
Federal regulators wrote in a statement that "the proposed merger between Delta and Northwest is likely to produce substantial and credible efficiencies that will benefit U.S. consumers and is not likely to substantially lessen competition."
