(NECN) - Investors chew over some tough economic news, stocks close sharply lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average drops more than 224 points, to close at 11, 431. The Nasdaq Composite drops more than 22 ending at 2,355. The S&P 500 is off 23, closing at 1266.

Regionally, Bloomberg's New England Index falls nearly three points. The New England Stock Index is off about one.
