(NECN) - Boston restaurants will soon go trans-fat free. The city has voted to approve a controversial ban.
Boston's Public Health Commission gave the final approval to the ban on Thursday following a public hearing. The panel gave the measure preliminary approval in January.
Many restaurants say they have already eliminated trans fats - also known as partially-hydrogenated oils, after they were linked to clogged arteries and heart disease.
New York City and Philadelphia are among the cities that have banned restaurants from using trans fats in food preparation and cooking. Baltimore's City Council approved a similar measure earlier this week.
The ban will take effect in Boston 180 days from Thursday, on September 13th.
NECN's John Moroney has more.
