| August 11, 2008 Important tips to prepare kids for school year
|
(NECN) - Our back to school week interviews continue with some important tips on how to get yourself prepared for the upcoming school year.
To discuss this is Heather Kempskie the editor for Parents and Kids.
- wake up routine
Several weeks before the start of school, set a limit for the latest bedtime and wake-up time. Then gradually move these times earlier (about 15 minutes every other day) as the first day of school approaches.
Establish a sleep routine. Keeping the same schedule (brush teeth, read a story, say good night) makes it easier for children to fall asleep at night and wake up in the morning.
- talk about concerns
Are your kids concerned about not having their best friend in the same class? Are they nervous about entering a new school? Listen to their concerns and focus on the positive!
Do you know what topics they may be studying this year? Take out some books from your local library to pique their interest.
- cool homework space
Clear the dining room table or rework another space to serve as the designated homework station.
Personalize the space by hanging up fun posters or inspiring quotes.
- get in that last bit of summer fun
Throw a "School is Cool" party at your house. Invite over some classmates, play games and make ice cream sundaes.

-information gathering:
The school's attendance and homework
policies;
The school's policies and procedures for picking up a child, or having a friend or relative pick up a child after school;and how the school handles things like payment for meals, whether there's a dress code or uniform, and the attendance policy.
The school's policies on managing food allergies.
- staying organized (folder)
- talk about first time bus behavior
- figure out how your child's school works, which administrators/teachers you should be talking to if you have a problem (eg. Bus situation in article)
- Get involved:
Key at kindergarten age is checking the child's backpack in the evening for notices about school activities, notes from teachers and opportunities for parents to get involved
