|
(NECN: Boston) - Dr. Carlos David of the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts, says doctors will need to gather more information about Sen. Edward Kennedy's brain tumor before they can design a course of treatment.
But he says there is already a large amount of information at hand. David notes that in a right-handed person, the left parietal lobe plays an important role in langauge skills and other abilities, making surgery difficult. (Gliomas are not cured by surgery, however.) David says surgery would be expected to take as much out of the tumor as possible.
Dr. David says the usual treatment would include chemotherapy and radiation, with newer possible options available if the senator was to take part in a clinical trial. Dr. David is not part of the team treating Sen. Kennedy.
