(Katie Daly, NECN) - Thousands of high school students will spend big bucks on dresses and tuxedos in order to look sharp. Many also want a nice tan for the big night, but the tan comes with health risks.
Script:
These high school students want a sun kissed glow for prom night. Like 30 million other Americans, they expect to get that look at a tanning salon.
And with the whole prom thing, the Indian Summer Tanning Spa in Worcester has seen an increase in business.
Salon manager: "Business is good every year between April and May. Business picks up with the proms."
Indian Summer Spa, along with many other area salons, is attracting students with discounts as they get ready for their big night.
Public health officials are concerned that the tanning bargains may end up costing students later on. The Department of Public Health in Worcester takes regulating tanning salons seriously. Teenagers under the age of 17, must have parental consent to tan. Warning signs disclosing the harmful effects of UV rays must also be posted in salons.
For students over seventeen, it's more than just a tan...it's also about having fun.
Student: "I usually tan with friends we do something before and after."
