(NECN/WTAE) - Think before you snap. That is the message Greensburg, Pennsylvania police are hoping local students will get, because six of them are now facing criminal charges for "sexting".
"It's very dangerous. Once it's on a cell phone a cell phone can be put on the internet. Where everybody in the world can get access to that picture," Greensburg Police Captain George Seranko said. "You don't realize what you're doing until it's already done."
Police said a 14-year-old girl and two 15-year-old girls sent naked pictures of themselves via cell phone to their 15, 16 and 17-year-old boyfriends.
"Taking nude pictures of yourself, nothing good can come out of it," Seranko said. "The best thing to do is to use a phone for what a phone is made for. Talking to people. If you're taking pictures, make sure the picture is of something that isn't illegal."
Police said one of the girls had her phone on during school, which is against the district's electronic device policy, so her phone was confiscated. That's when the district said an administrator found the naked pictures.
Once police were involved, they obtained search warrants that they alleged lead them to the other students.
"If these do get on the internet, anybody can get a hold of them," Seranko said. "And who knows what they are going to do with them. That's the biggest thing."
