(NECN: Fremont, California) - A helicopter has crashed near a Northern California freeway in the early hours of Friday morning.

The crash took place in Fremont, near San Francisco.

The crash started a grass fire near the road and knocked power lines into the path of traffic on the freeway.

Fire department officials are on the scene and have closed one lane of the freeway.

There is no immediate information on any deaths or injuries, though a witness believes at least one person has died in the crash.

Officials say the aircraft was not a law enforcement helicopter, but was otherwise unsure of the aircraft's owner.
