(NECN/WTNH) - Vice President Dick Cheney spoke Wednesday at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's 127th commencement exercises.
More than 200 graduating cadets officially earned the rank of ensign.
"From this day forward you will be the lifeguards and the guardian of the sea, an immense set of duties which all of you well understand," Cheney said.
The vice president was joined by Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff.
Final preparations began days ago. The football field where the ceremony takes place has been spruced up for hundreds of families and friends.
Last year President George Bush gave the commencement address. He focused on the responsibility of the Coast Guard during this sensitive time in our world.
The president's visit was met with protest both those for and against the war. Though several hundred protectors showed up, the crowds remained peaceful.
Several groups were expected to take their place along the motorcade route again this year. The Gathering of Eagles, dedicated to honoring soldiers and
their families, were expected, and anti-war groups like Connecticut Opposes War are also expected.
