(NECN: Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) - Three people are dead after a refrigerated gas leaked from a shipping container in Port Everglades.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office says the three victims were workers who were loading the containers onto the cargo ship Madeleine.
They were found unresponsive after emergency workers received a call about the leaking gas around three-twenty Tuesday morning.
Port officials said the Madeleine arrived from Ecuador.
The victims worked for Florida Transportation Services, a company whose workers are hired to load equipment on and off the ships.
The suspect gas is a colorless and odorless gas called argon. It is not harmful if out in the open but the container on the ship was in a closed space.
A crane was used to remove the shipping container from the ship and move it to a secured area of the port.
