(NECN: East Providence, RI) - Police in Rhode Island have unearthed what could be human remains in their search for the body of a person killed in a 1970s Mob hit. Police also uncovered what appears to be a boot or shoe.
The excavation site is a dirt lot behind an apartment complex.
The excavation began Monday when police charged nearly two dozen people allegedly connected to Mafia crime rings.
Law enforcement officials have said they are searching for the body of someone killed by the mob about three decades ago, but they have not identified the victim.
One of those arrested in Monday's sweep was Nicholas Pari, who was convicted of killing Joseph "Joe Onions" Scanlon in 1978.
Scanlon's body was never found.
