(NECN: Latoyia Edwards, Worcester, Mass.) - A 16-year-old mother from Worcester, Massachusetts was in court this morning to face a murder charge. She is accused of suffocating her one-year-old son with a teddy bear.
The homicide suspect entered a not guilty plea during her murder arraignment this morning and will be held without bail at least until her January court appearance.
Police said the teenager handed her unconscious son to police officers when they arrived at her apartment early Sunday morning. Police said the teenager first told police she found the child unresponsive, but later told authorities she suffocated him.
The teen's boyfriend, 17-year-old Edwin Vasquez, says the boy was recovering from a cold when his health took a sudden turn for the worse.
"I think he just died from sudden death syndrome," said Vasquez.
The teenage homicide suspect will turn 17 tomorrow. Her name has not been released by authorities.
