January 1, 2009 Couple rings in new year with baby girl Play video

(Kristen Caira, NECN: New Bedford, MA) - The new year brings with it, celebrations of new life around New England. The first babies of 2009 were welcomed shortly after midnight.

One of the first babies to be born in Massachusetts was at Saint Luke's Hospital in New Bedford. Ava Grace Gomes was born just after midnight.

NECN's Kristen Caira spoke with proud parents Aren Gomes and Jessica Melo about the special day.
