Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing Boat

Search was suspended at 7 a.m. Saturday pending further developments

The U.S. Coast Guard is suspending its search on Lake Champlain for a boat that sent a distress call Friday night.

The Burlington Free Press reports (http://bfpne.ws/2agskKy ) that the Coast Guard received the distress call, in French, at about 10:30 p.m. Friday. The message said there were five people aboard.

Coast Guard Chief Michael Faivre says his agency put out an urgent marine broadcast and searched on water and from the air the area around Valcour Island through the night. He said they found no sign of a distressed vessel.

Faivre said the search involved three boats and a Coast Guard aircraft from Cape Cod.

He said the search was suspended at 7 a.m. Saturday pending further developments.
