MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas says he will veto a gay marriage bill if it passes the Legislature. Douglas, a Republican, had said previously he was against same-sex marriage and that lawmakers shouldn't have spent their time on it this session, given the economy and the state's multi-million dollars budget deficits. A bill that would replace the state's first-in-the-nation civil unions law with one that allows gay and lesbian couples to marry passed the state Senate on Tuesday. The House is now considering similar legislation. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
