(NECN: Amy Sinclair, Kennebunkport, Maine) - The Bush family compound on Walker's Point is Kennebunkport’s most famous attraction. Now, visitors will have another reason to stop by for a photo op.. The chance to pose in front of this 6-thousand pound Navy anchor--a surprise gift for former President George H W Bush from his summer friends in Kennebunkport. President Bush: "A surprise can be kept. I can tell you I didn't have the vaguest idea. I was whining at Jean Beckert. She says Ken wants you to go up to the golf course. I said what the hell for I was up there two days ago..." Instead of a round of golf, the 41st president was greeted by friends and family who wanted to acknowledge his 85-year relationship with this coastal town. KEN: "he's used the tranquility of Kennebunkport to bring world leaders here to create an even playing field to remember what life is all about." Sitting side by side with Mrs. Bush, the former president smiled as friends shared stories about what it was like being golf buddies with the leader of the free world Sonny: "I finally realized coming up the 9th they're not looking at me.. they're looking at you..and I said..this is fun! And they listened to their granddaughter Lauren sharing sweet memories of summers past. Lauren: "Storms have knocked down the big house with granny's china being thrown onto the beach..making for fun hunts as a kid." One of the reasons they're beloved here is that they're a part of the community. The bushes play golf, go out for ice cream eat a local restaurants. Mable's is a favorite. This is the corner table where they sit. The president recommends the peanut butter pie. The plaque notes that just as President Bush was an anchor to the nation...Kennebunkport has been his anchor... Bush: "It means everything. Total continuity, family, love happiness, beauty everything got it all wrapped into one." And if visitors are very lucky they'll even get a glimpse of the former president hanging out with his dogs on his favorite place on earth.
