(NECN: Marnie MacLean, Bath, Maine) - New England is known for its quaint highways and byways, especially at this time of year when the foliage is peaking. So, it might surprise you to know that only one road in New England made the list of Great Streets in America. That street is Front Street in Bath, Maine. Part of what keeps it real is history. Front Street was built when Bath was on the forefront of the shipping industry; the giant cranes of Bath Iron Works can still be seen from the street. The National Planning Association called Front Street an architectural treasure, and commended the citizens of Bath who have worked to preserve its history. Over the years, there has been a dedicated effort to keep the downtown vital -- business owners work together to promote Front Street -- the garden club keeps the flowers blooming...and residents do their part by spending their money here.
