The University of Connecticut has been mourning the death of Howard for just over a week now. People on campus are now being assured by police that the people involved in Howard's murder are in custody.
Chief Robert Hudd, University of CT PD: "I am pleased to announce today the arrest of John W. Lomax on the charge of murder and Hakim Muhammad on the charge of conspiracy to commit assault in the first degree."
UConn police chief Robert Hudd announcing arrests in the case that has consumed this college campus for more than a week. John W. Lomax the third, 21-years-old, from Bloomfield, Connecticut is charged with stabbing UConn football star Jasper Howard to death during the early morning hours of Sunday, October 18th. 20-year-old Hakim Muhammad of Bloomfield is charged with taking part in the fight that lead up to the stabbing. A third man, 21-year-old Jamal Todd of Hartford, is charged with pulling a fire alarm that lead to the abrupt end of a dance at the student union where the altercation that lead
to the stabbing is thought to have started. None of the suspects is a student here. More than 40 investigators from the UConn police and the state police worked exclusively on this case interviewing more than 200 people and conducting searches both on and off campus. In the meantime Jasper Howard was laid to rest in Miami on Monday.
Commissioner John Danaher III, CT Dept. Of Public Safety: "Yesterday his many friends and family paid their last respects to him. Coincidentally but fittingly yesterday was also marked by the signing of a warrant for the individual who is charged with his murder. Warrants were signed for others associated with this crime."
Those warrants have been sealed by the court so we know little about what police believe happened that night. We do know police asked people to come forward with cell phone video and pictures from the dance and the aftermath and that they looked at those during the investigation.
Chief Robert Hudd, University of CT PD: "UConn itself is a family. We've had an outpouring of emotion. We've had numerous calls from people offering help both from law enforcement and from our community here and we've had a tremendous number of emails from people asking us to solve the crime and, in laymen's terms, make things right."
They feel that have done that. Lomax is being held on 2-million dollars bond. Muhammad on 750-thousand. Both are due to be arraigned on Wednesday.
There is a lot we still don't know. We still have no motive in the stabbing, and there is a question as to whether Jamal Todd is charged with pulling the fire alarm as part of a plan to move the fight outside.
