Lodie changes plea, sentenced to 8-12 years

(NECN: Brad Puffer, Dedham, Mass.) - Emotions ran high in court on Wednesday as a Massachusetts man plead guilty in connection to the death of a Revere police officer.

The family of Officer Daniel Talbot was in court as Derek Lodie, now 19 years old, changed his plea from not guilty to guilty to accessory before the fact of a homicide. Lodie was sentenced to 8 to 12 years in prison.

Prior to his sentencing, Talbot's mother and fiancee addressed the court.

"My family is now left broken and our hearts will never be able to fully mend," his mother Patricia Talbot said.

"I was with Dan the night he was shot. I now live my life with that last vision of Dan gasping for air, while I held his hand telling to be strong and that I loved him," fiancee Constantine Bethell said.

Prosecutors said Talbot and other Revere police officers were socializing near the Revere High School athletic field in September 2007 when Lodie exchanged words with the officers.

Lodie allegedly called friends to the scene, one of whom allegedly shot and killed Talbot.

He has spent the past two years in jail, so he will spent at least another six in state prison before becoming eligible for parole. As for the three other defendants, two are charged with accessory after the fact for allegedly helping get rid of the gun involved. The other is charged with murder and his trial is set for January.
