(NECN: Greg Wayland, Providence, RI) - Congressman Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island is locked in a dispute with the Catholic Church. Kennedy, who is Catholic, has been asked not to take Communion because of his stance on abortion. There has been no comment from Rep. Patrick Kennedy since news broke over the weekend that Diocese of Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin had asked the Democratic lawmaker not to take Holy Communion because of his stance on abortion rights. Kennedy told The Providence Journal that Tobin instructed him not to take Communion. Tobin says he is disappointed that Kennedy decided to make public the request which he intended to be confidential. He also says given the circumstances as they exist right now he, "probably would not give him Holy Communion. Information from the Associated Press is included in this report.
