Middlesex County Register of Probate John Buonomo was caught on tape, allegedly stealing money from the machines in the Registry of Deeds in East Cambridge.
In 2000, Buonomo, of Newton, Massachusetts, was elected to finish out an un-expired term -- and was re-elected in 2002.
Buonomo has been placed on administrative leave without pay.
His lawyer says he denies doing anything wrong.
