Caught on tape: Elected official stealing money

(NECN: Greg Wayland, Cambridge, Mass.) - An elected official from Massachusetts was is in court today, accused of stealing thousands of dollars from copy and cash machines. He's now free on personal recognizance.

Middlesex County Register of Probate John Buonomo was caught on tape, allegedly stealing money from the machines in the Registry of Deeds in East Cambridge.

In 2000, Buonomo, of Newton, Massachusetts, was elected to finish out an un-expired term -- and was re-elected in 2002.

Buonomo has been placed on administrative leave without pay.

His lawyer says he denies doing anything wrong.

A pre-trial hearing will take place on September 18.
