Cool, clear and clean H20 in Southampton

(NECN: Southampton, Mass.) - This Western Massachusetts community has the best tasting water in America.

NECN's Greg Wayland has the story.

Script:

Southampton, Mass. - where you'll find one traffic light, premium hay, good horses, and great water.

Bouquet, clarity, taste....the National Blue Ribbon went to the sparkling stuff they draw from eighty feet down into the old green shed with the big green pump.

Joe Slattery has been Town Water Superintendent since 1973.

Slattery: “The way it happened was, back in June of 2007, they had a state contest for the best drinking water in the state.”

Southampton won the state contest, and sent a jug down to Washington for the national finals. Their water beat out an Ohio entry for the National Rural Waterworks Annual Earth Day Great American Water Taste Test.

The little green control house went up in 1964.

“And then, three years ago, as the system grew, we needed more water and this water here is of such a high quality that we don't have to treat it and it comes direct out of the ground right into the distribution system.”

Slattery: “It runs through the natural gravel formations and that's the same as if you had a big filtration plant and it just filters out any impurities that might be in it.”

Joe doesn't understand folks who fork out money for bottled water.

“There's people in town here that have relatives and friends come to the town

and take water home with them.”
