(NECN: Lauren Collins, Manchester, NH) - It could have been much worse, but the quick work of neighbors and firefighters kept a blaze in Manchester, New Hampshire from turning tragic. It happened Friday morning in a triple decker in the city.
It didn't take long for this tightly packed neighborhood to turn into a scene of chaos. Neighbors began flooding the emergency lines shortly before 9:00 Friday morning to say 198 Auburn Street was on fire -- and that people were trapped inside.
A brother, sister and her two babies lived on the third floor. They made it down one level before getting trapped. An off-duty firefighter went in to help and a passerby caught the toddler and newborn from a second floor window. Three adults were rescued when firefighters arrived.
Six residents were taken to the hospital, most of them to be treated for smoke inhalation.
One firefighter was injured when he fell on broken glass. And, just as equally as firefighters saved lives, they protected the other apartments just inches from the blaze.
