(Scot Yount, NECN: Boston, MA) - To mark Whitey Bulger's 79th birthday, the FBI is upping the ante for information leading to his capture.
The FBI is doubling the reward to a total of $2 million.
Bulger, the former head of the Winter Hill Gang and FBI informant, fled in 1995 after being tipped off that he was about to be indicted on federal charges. Authorities say as an informant, Bulger gave FBI information on his gang's main rival, the New England mob.
He was later charged in connection with 19 murders.
He is also wanted for the alleged sexual assault of girls as young as 12 years old.
Bulger remains on the FBI's ten most wanted list.
