(NECN: Providence, RI) - Three people were struck by a northbound Amtrak Acela train today -- just north of the Providence, Rhode Island Amtrak station. A worker who was inspecting the tracks died.
Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole says two other workers were seriously injured when they were hit by train #2154 at 1:15 p.m. The injured workers were sent to a nearby hospital.
Roger Kay, a passenger on the five-car train, says they were traveling slowly after leaving the station when the train hit the workers.
The train was heading to Boston from Washington D.C.
None of the 168 people on the train were hurt. Train traffic was temporarily halted in both directions at the accident site and MBTA service on the Providence line was operating between Attleboro and Boston only.
Amtrak service in Providence resumed at 3:48 p.m. following the temporary suspension.
An investigation is now underway.
NECN's Scot Yount has the latest.
