(NECN: Anya Huneke, Rutland, VT) - A Vermont man is on trial in one of the most closely watched murder cases in years. Brian Rooney is accused of raping and killing 21-year-old Michelle Gardner Quinn. The UVM student disappeared in October of 2006.
The 37-year-old Rooney of Richmond is accused of raping and
killing 21-year-old Michelle Gardner Quinn, after a chance
encounter in downtown Burlington when she borrowed his cell phone.
She disappeared after that and was found dead six days later.
Prosecutor Matthew Levine told jurors Rooney raped Gardner-Quinn
and killed her to cover it up, while defense attorney David Sleigh
derided the state's case as guesswork and conjecture.
Testimony was postponed Friday because Rooney is ill.
