One ex-prisoner from Worcester, Massachusetts says it is nearly impossible to find a job after leaving jail.
Katie Daly has the story.
Script:
Joe Riordan of Worcester has been out of prison for two years, but he doesn’t feel free.
Riordan struggles to find work because employers have access to his criminal offenders record information also known as a Cori. Currently, state law allows employers to review an applicant’s entire record.
Riordan admits he has an extensive criminal record, but spends his days looking for a job hoping for a second chance. At Worcester’s Dismas house, people like Eddie Crawford work to help ex -prisoners transition back into society. He says there are enough resources available to help people get a job, but criminal records paint a picture for some that isn’t reflective of their ability to work.
“Evaluate what they are into now, evaluate the time of change, be willing to give them an opportunity of trust.”
Governor Deval Patrick is trying to implement measures that would limit background checks. A hearing will be held at the Massachusetts State House on Tuesday to discuss whether criminal records should be sealed after a decade.
