What made the fire at 200 Boylston St. an even more troubling tragedy, some say, is that there were serious problems with the building that officials say went undetected for years.
Fire investigators found that the exit stairways at 200 Boylston Street were not properly enclosed to prevent the spread of smoke and flames, even though this was required by city building code regulations dating back to 1939.
Exit corridors lacked fire-rated doors, and combustible wall coverings were used in the hallways and stairways.
In Chapter 2 of the NECN documentary, “The Forgotten Fire”, Leslie Gaydos takes a look at the construction history of 200 Boylston, and the permitting questions that linger about renovations to the building.
