(NECN: Newton, Mass.) - The National Transportation Safety Board has arrived in Newton, Massachusetts to begin its investigation into Wednesday's deadly MBTA crash.
Board member Kathryn "Kitty" Higgins and rail investigator Wayne Workman are leading a team to determine the cause of the crash, which killed 24-year-old Terese Edmonds.
Higgins estimates there were between 180-200 passengers on board at the time of the accident, which occurred between Waban and Woodland stations. She confirms one fatality, and seven injuries. One of those injured was air-lifted and remains in serious condition.
The NTSB has begun working with the MBTA to figure out how the accident happened, and formulate how to prevent similar accidents from happening in the future. The investigation will include inspecting the tracks, signals, operations logs, and human performance. Higgins says that interviews will begin Friday.
