New Bedford, MA man charged with rape

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) - A New Bedford man is charged with raping a 3-year-old male relative.

Nelson Mastera was arrested on Sunday and was ordered held on $10,000 bail at his arraignment in New Bedford District Court on Monday.

Police Lt. Jeffrey Silva says the department was notified by the Department of Children and Families of the alleged abuse. The department received the report from a third party, who had been told by the child's parents of the alleged abuse.

The 52-year-old Mastera, who occasionally baby-sat the boy, was arrested Sunday at his home after police were told by a relative that he was planning to leave for Florida.

Mastera is scheduled to return to court Sept. 2 for a probable cause hearing.
